SRI LANKA COAST GUARD INVOLVED IN INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP DAY PROGRAMME

The Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) actively participated in the international coastal cleanup day programme which was launched from 15th to 22nd September 2017 under the directives of His Excellency the President in collaboration with the government and non-government organizations. The Department of Coastal Conservation and CoastalResources Management, MarineEnvironment Protection Authority and the Divisional Secretariats of relevant areascoordinated the event.In addition to Sri Lanka Coast Guard, Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Air Force and Sri Lanka Police also actively participated for the event.

SLCG personnel of SLCG Waruna,SLCG Rohna, Life Saving Training School Balapitiya, Coast Guard Station Kirinda and Coast Guard Station Oluwil, participated covering beach area of Wallawaththa, Panadura, Dikovita, Beruwela, Bandarawaththa, Mirissa, Polhena, Thalaramba,Kirinda, and Oluwil respectively.

During the cleanup process large quantity ofwaste items such as plastic bottles, polythene,garbage were collected by the SLCG personnel and handed over to the local authorities.The programme was successful and government authorities greatly appreciated the activities done by Sri Lanka Coast Guardduring the event in meeting the objectives.The Sri Lanka Coast Guard stands for the serenity of the coastline and this is just another programme coming under the Coast Guard’s Eco-Friendly Projects on routine basis also.
