SLCG RESCUED HUNDREDS OF PILOT WHALES STRANDED ON PANADURA BEACH

Coast Guard personnel attached to Western Region with the assistance of Sri Lanka Navy, Department of Wildlife and many volunteers in the area saved over hundreds of stranded Pilot whales beached in Panadura beach on 03rd November 2020.

CG personnel attached Coast Guard Station, Panadura noticed stranded pod of ‘Pilot Whales’ beached to Panadura beach near Fishery Harbour around 1300 on 02nd November and notified the Sri Lanka Navy, Department of Wildlife, National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA). A team of SLCG rescuers with the assistance of other stakeholders and volunteers continued the coordinated rescue mission overnight despite raging waves and currents to return the pod of whales to sea successfully.

Volunteers and neighbors in the area provided Jetskis and lit the beach area with vehicle mounted flood lights to assist rescue mission during dark hours which was instrumental in successfully returning the ‘Pilot whales’ back to sea.
