SRI LANKA COAST GUARD ARREST FISHERMEN FOR ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES

Coast Guard personnel arrested 10 fishermen along with a Trawler, Canoe and illegal fishing gears whilst engaged in fishing off Balapitiya area during a special operation conducted at night on 28thDecember 2017. Arrested fishermen with belongings handed over to the Assistant Director Fisheries – Galle for further investigations/ legal actions.

Using of Purse Seine for fishing is an illegal fishing operation under the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Act No. 2 of 1996. Coast Guard intends to expand its operations against illegal fishing in year 2018 around the island.
