DEPLOYMENT OF SLCG OIL SPILL RESPONSE MANAGEMENT TEAM FOR OIL SPILLAGE AT KOLONNAWA

The Oil Spill Response Management Team of the Department of Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) was mobilized a.m 16th January 2018 at Kolonnawa in order to mitigate a Furnace Oil spillage on the request of Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminals Limited (CPSTL). The team, specialized to tackle this type of pollutions commenced their activities at site with the clean-up teams employed by the Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminals Limited.

As per the National Oil Spill Contingency Plan (NOSCP), the Department of Sri Lanka Coast Guard maintains a team on 24/7 basis as the National Oil Spill Response Team with technical and logistic support to reach even to the territorial seas.

The clean- up operations are expected to take couple of days with the Marine Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA) also engaging as the National Authority. SLCG has recently expanded its capacities on Oil Spill Response Management through new additions and enhanced practices.
