Fishermen Taken Into Custody For Illegal Fishing Of Shark

Sri Lanka Coast Guards’ watchful eyes successfully captured fishermen who conducted illegal fishing of shark in the past two days. The Coast Guard personnel attached to CGS Dickovita arrested a fishing trawler named ‘RANKURULLA’ with 06 fishermen, in possession of Thresher Shark fins (7.6Kg), Ocean White Tip Shark fins (1.2Kg) and dried Shark flesh (211.8Kg), a total of 220.6Kg at Dickovita fisheries Harbour on 04thMarch 2018.

Similarly, on 05th March 2018 a fishing trawler named ‘LIHINI 1’ with 05 fishermen, in possession of one Thresher Shark fins (1.6Kg), Ocean White Tip Shark fin (0.85Kg) and dried Shark flesh (64.9Kg), a total of 67.35Kg was also apprehended by the SLCG personnel at Dikovita fisheries Harbour. The arrested persons and illegal fishing catch were handed over to the Police for further investigations and legal actions.

White Tip Shark is a protected species under Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Gazette No.1938/2, Dated 2015 October 26 and this sort of illegal fishing should be condoned.
