26 FISHERMEN APPREHENDED FOR ENGAGED IN ILLEGAL FISHING PRACTICES

With the assistance of SL Coast Guard, Navy apprehended 26 fishermen along with 05 dinghies engaged in illegal fishing practices in Koddiyar Bay in Trincomalee during past 2 weeks.

During these apprehensions, 03 unauthorized (Surukku/ Laila) fishing nets and 1931 Kg’s of illegal fish harvest were also taken in to the custody.

The apprehended persons and their fishing gears were handed over to Assistant Director Fisheries in Trincomalee by the Coast Guard for onward legal action. It has observed that illegal fishing practices continue to happen in Eastern Coast despite the efforts taken to curb those illegal activities.
