24 FISHERMEN APPREHENDED FOR ILLEGAL FISHING PRACTICES

With the assistance of Sri Lanka Coast Guard, Sri Lanka Navy apprehended 24 fishermen along with 03 dinghies engaged in illegal fishing practices near Elizabeth Island, Round Island and South West of Norway Island areas in Trincomalee during last week.

03 unauthorized (Purse seine) fishing nets and 273 Kgs of illegally caught fish were also taken in to the custody.

The apprehended persons and fishing gears were handed over to Assistant Director Fisheries of Trincomalee through the Department of Coast Guard for onward legal action. It has observed that illegal fishing practices continue to happen in Eastern Coast despite the efforts taken to curb those illegal activities.
