SRI LANKA COAST GUARD CONTINUE TO CONDUCT DROWNING PREVENTION AWARENESS PROGRAMMES FOR GENERAL PUBLIC

Regional Director, Southern Region (RDSR) of Sri Lanka Coast Guard conducted a series of drowning prevention awareness programmes for the School students, Fishermen and Civil Organizations from 02nd to 09th November 2018 at various locations in the Southern Province in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Coast Guard conducted this awareness programmes by qualified Life-Saving Instructors of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard in parallel to the Sri Lanka National drowning prevention plan launched recently. The programme was conducted for the Fishing community at Marissa, Hikkaduwa and Ambalangoda fishery harbours including school children of Devapathiraja National School –Rathgama, ThalAramba School – Marissa and Siri Sumana Primary School –Rathgama for the total of 715 personnel and also another programme was conducted for tourist boat riders at Madu River at Balapitiya.

Drowning has become second major cause of death incidents in Sri Lanka which accounts for approximately 800 deaths per year. Sri Lanka Coast Guard continues its contribution to drowning prevention activities in Sri Lanka.
