SRI LANKA COAST GUARD APPREHENDED A FISHING VESSEL WHILE TRANSFERRING A DEAD WHALE

SLCG personnel attached to Chilaw Fishery Harbour apprehended 3 fishermen and a Fiber Glass Dinghy (FGD) while transferring a dead whale on 01st February 2021.The particular factum is an offence under the Fauna and Flora Protected Ordinance Chapter 469 Section 30.

Apprehension was done by Coast Guard Harbour Craft 101 while attempting to transfer the dead whale to ashore secretly onboard FGD. Arrested persons with apprehended items were handed over to Fisheries Inspector, Chilaw for onward legal action.

The dead whale is a Pigmy Sperm Whale and the pygmy sperm whale is one of two extant species in the family Kogiidae in the sperm whale super family.
