SRI LANKA COAST GUARD APPREHENDED A FISHING VESSELS WITH ILLEGALLY HARVESTED SHARK FINS

Sri Lanka Coast Guard personnel deployed at Cod bay Fishery Harbour in Trincomalee for fishery monitoring and regulating duties apprehended two Multiday Fishing Vessels along with fishermen in possession of illegally harvested Shark fins on 9th and 11th February 2021 in two separate incidents.

SLCG personnel found 133 dried shark fins and approx. 83 kg of dried shark flesh concealed in the fishing gears during a search operation conducted on board a ‘Multiday Fishing Vessel’ which returned harbour after month long fishing on 9th February. Another ‘Multiday Fishing Vessel’ arrested with five fishermen on 11th February for the possession of illegally harvested shark fins.

Both vessels and arrested persons were handed over to Additional Director, Fisheries, Trincomalee for onward legal actions.

Similar type of apprehensions were made by the Sri Lanka Coast Guard personnel deployed in the Cod Bay fishery harbour on 5th January 2021 and in Mirissa fishery harbour on 7th February 2021.
