SRI LANKA COAST GUARD APPREHENDED A FISHING VESSELS WITH ILLEGALLY HARVESTED SHARK FLESH AND FINS

Sri Lanka Coast Guard personnel deployed at Cod Bay Fishery Harbour and Myliddy Fishery Harbour for fishery monitoring and regulating duties apprehended two Multiday Fishing Vessels along with fishermen in possession of illegally harvested Shark flesh and fins on 14th February 2021 in two separate incidents.

SLCG personnel found and approx. 331 kg of dried thresher shark flesh & 300g of dried shark fins during a search operation conducted on board a ‘Multiday Fishing Vessel’ which returned harbour after two weeks of fishing on 14th February. Another ‘Multiday Fishing Vessel’ arrested with six fishermen in Cod Bay Fishery harbour with the possession of illegally harvested shark fins.

Both vessels and arrested persons were handed over to Additional Director, Fisheries, Jaffna and Trincomalee respectively for onward legal actions.
