SLCG FOILS A SMUGGLING ATTEMPT BY SEIZING OVER 2219 KG OF DRIED TURMERIC

SLCG seized a consignment of 60 bags of dried turmeric while attempting to be smuggled into the Island by sea near Wennappuwa (Kolin Jadiya) on 05^th March 2021.

During a special operation, a Coast Guard team attached to Western Region seized approx. 2219 kg of dried turmeric whitest loading to a freezer truck. The consignment had been stuffed in 60 Polysack bags as they were recovered by Coast Guard personnel.

Six suspects were also arrested with a 'Freezer Truck' used for the smuggling attempt. The operation was conducted in complying with the COVID -19 prevention guidelines stipulated by health authorities. The seized consignment of dried turmeric with six suspects handed over to the Customs Preventive Office, Katunayake for onward investigation.
