COAST GUARD APPREHENDED FISHING VESSELS WITH ILLEGALLY HARVESTED SHARK FINS

Sri Lanka Coast Guard personnel deployed at Negambo Fishery Harbour for fishery monitoring and regulating duties apprehended two Multiday Fishing Vessels along with fishermen in possession of illegally harvested Shark fins on 04^th and 05^th May 2021.

SLCG personnel found Illegally harvested shark fins hidden onboard during arrival formalities. Both fishing vessels and arrested persons were handed over to Fisheries Inspector Negambo for onward legal actions.

The retaining on board, transshipping or landing the ‘fins or carcass of sharks of which fins have been removed’ is an offence under the Shark Fisheries Management (High Seas) Regulations, 2015.
