SRI LANKA COAST GUARD APPREHENDED FISHING VESSEL WITH ILLEGALLY HARVESTED SHARK FINS

Sri Lanka Coast Guard personnel deployed at Beruwala fishery harbour for fishery monitoring and regulating duties apprehended one multiday fishing vessel along with six fishermen in possession of illegally harvested Shark fins (approx. 55 kgs) on 13th May 2021.

SLCG personnel found illegally harvested Shark fins hidden onboard during arrival formalities. Fishing vessel and arrested persons were handed over to Fishery Inspector (Beruwala) for onward legal action.

The retaining onboard, transshipping or landing the ‘Fins or Carcass of Sharks of which fins have been removed’ is an offence under the Shark Fisheries Management (High Seas) Regulations, 2015.
