COAST GUARD SEIZES OVER 219KG OF HEROIN

A joint operation conducted by the SLCG in coordination with SLN in the coastal area of Polwathumodara, Weligama, led to the seizure of over 219kg of heroin attempted to be smuggled into the island by sea around 2230 hrs on 12th June 2021.

Three racketeers with a haul of heroin concealed in four gas cylinders and 2 poly sacks seized by a joint operation team whilst transferring to shore near Polwathumodara, Weligama. Further interrogation revealed that the haul of heroin transferred to FGD by a multi-day fishing vessel, which was later apprehended seizing another 3.3 Kg of heroin and six fishermen on board. The street value of the seized consignment of heroin is believed to be over Rs. 1758 million.

The assistance received from the Indian Coast Guard in accordance with the ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ signed between two coast guards for the cooperation for the suppressing and preventing illegal trafficking of narcotics was instrumental in the overall success of this operation.
