COAST GUARD FOILS A SMUGGLING ATTEMPT BY SEIZING OVER 900 KG OF DRIED TURMERIC

Coast Guard seized a consignment of 26 bags of dried turmeric while attempting to be smuggled from India on 05th July 2021near fishery harbour Chilaw.

During a special operation, a Coast Guard team attached to Western Region seized approx. 909 kg of dried turmeric whilst loading to a Cab. The consignment had been stuffed in 26 Poly sacks as they were recovered by Coast Guard personnel.

Four suspects including suspected smuggler were also arrested with a Fiber Glass Dinghy, a cab and Motor Cycle used for the smuggling attempt.

The operation was conducted in complying with the COVID -19 prevention guidelines stipulated by health authorities. The seized consignment of dried turmeric with four suspects handed over to the Customs Preventive Office, Katunayake for onward investigation.
