SRI LANKA COAST GUARD SHIP SURAKSHA APPREHENDED AN INDIAN FISHING VESSEL SMUGGLING MORE THAN 05 TONS OF DRIED TURMERIC

Sri Lanka Coast Guard Ship Suraksha apprehended consignment of more than 5300 kg of dried turmeric in 143 bags while attempting to be smuggled from India onboard a Indian dhow on 07th August 2021 off Chilaw point.

During a routine patrol SLCGS Suraksha intercepted a infiltrated Indian dhow in SL waters and seized about 5372 kg (wet weight ) dried turmeric stuffed in 143 poly sacks whilst checking the dhow by Ship’s boarding team. Five Indian nationals were arrested along with the dhow, which was used for the smuggling attempt.

The operation was conducted in complying with the COVID -19 prevention guidelines stipulated by health authorities. The seized consignment of turmeric has been kept under custody of Sri Lanka Navy until is produced for onward legal prodding.

The apprehended 05 Indian national along with their dhow were repatriated to indian waters considering the prevailing covid pandemic.
