SRI LANKA COAST GUARD APPREHENDED A FISHING VESSEL WITH ILLEGALLY HARVESTED SHARK FINS

Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) personnel deployed at Beruwala fishery Harbour for fishery monitoring and regulating duties, apprehended 06 fishermen with a multiday fishing trawler in possession of illegally harvested Shark Fins approximately 134.85kgs (233 fins) on 25th September 2021.

The apprehension was made while inspection carried out onboard Multiday Fishing Trawler once they returned after fishing and those shark fins were concealed under the fishing nets laid on deck. Retaining, Transshipping or Landing ‘parts of any shark species’ is an offence under the Shark Fisheries Management (High Seas) Regulations.

The arrested persons with apprehended items were handed over to Fishery Inspector, Beruwala for onward legal actions.
