TURTLES CONSERVATION PROJECT OF SLCG

Three hundred and three (303) sea turtle hatchlings from Mirissa and Wellawatte turtle hatcheries managed by the Coast Guard Turtle Conservation Project (CGTCP) were released into the sea during the first week of March 2022.

The Coast Guard Turtle Conservation Project (CGTCP) was launched in September 2012 with the purpose of preserving the turtles, eggs and raising the awareness of sea turtle conservation in Sri Lanka as a part of the duties and functions of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard to assist in the conservation of marine species.

In addition, more than 7000 sea turtle eggs have already been conserved in hatcheries close to SLCG Life Saving Posts/Establishment for the purpose of releasing more turtle hatchlings into the ocean away from the threats of predators and surviving the critical stages of their early life.
