Lifeguard training pilot program for civilians which was conducted to train unemployed youths aiming them for foreign job market, started yielding results in less than a month after completing training.
A special lifeguard training course was conducted under the directives of the Director General Sri Lanka Coast Guard to study feasibilities of how SLCG lifeguard training is contributes to support economy of the country. This training course was conducted with the Ministry of Defence approval in parallel to sports economic development project introduced by the department of sports development and institute of sports medicine of the ministry of youth. National youth corps also joined with the program to introduce value addition to future employees by teaching them soft skills to improve working standards of lifeguards.
By realizing the primary objectives of the training program, two foreign job opportunities have been received for lifeguards and they will departure country in few days of time to fill lifeguard vacancies in United Arab Emirates. By empowering unemployed youths as standard lifeguards, potential overseas jobs related to aquatic facilities could be acquired and which in return paves the way in achieving high economic benefits from the training effort. Because, the return of investment of training a standard lifeguard can be achieved in a short period of time which the country presently needs to drive the economy. The Director General Sri Lanka Coast Guard has been given directives to continue training programs in Life Saving Training School to qualify unemployed youths for overseas jobs to get their support for the economic development of the country.
