NEW TREND OF CATCHING SHARK FISH DISCOVERED AT DIKOVITA

Sri Lanka Coast Guard personnel deployed in Dikovita Fishery Harbour for fishery monitoring and regulating duties apprehended a two Multiday Fishing Vessel along with thirteen fishermen in possession of illegally harvested prohibited Shark fins and Sharks fish on 22nd March 2022 during on arrival searching formalities.

The apprehension was made while conducting onboard inspection in Multiday Fishing Trawler at harbour. During searching it was found 37 Kg of Shark fish onboard FV Lakrajini 2 and found 20 Nos (Approx 1.4 Kg) dried shark fins and 31 Kg of shark fish onboard FV Marian2 mixed with other harvests onboard when they returned after fishing. Retaining, transshipping, or landing the ‘parts of any shark species’ is an offence as per the department of fisheries and aquatic resources act 1996 no 02 order no 3(i).

The arrested persons with apprehended items were handed over to Fisheries Inspector Dikovita for onward legal actions.
