Two hundred and six (206) turtle hatchlings have been hatched out from 237 turtle eggs conserved in various parts of the island under the Coast Guard Turtle Conservation Project (CGTCP). They have been safely released into the sea in recent days and this rare event has caught the eye of many foreigners and civilians in the area. The CGTCP takes every effort to conserve turtle eggs in or around their natural nesting cages to ensure safety and natural habitat, and only conserves them in protected areas when they are threatened.
To date, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard has released 9574 turtle hatchlings into the sea in this year and is conserving 6293 turtle eggs in hatcheries and nests close to the SLCG Life Saving Posts/ Establishments as a part of the duties and functions of the SLCG to assist in the conservation of endangered marine species.
