COAST GUARD RECOVERED SEA TURTLE EGGS

The collective effort of Coast Guard personnel attached to Life-Saving Posts Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Wellawaththa, Mount Lavinia and Panadura recovered 1743 numbers of a Sea turtle eggs from places close to their natural habitat during the period from 01st to 07th January 2023. Recovered eggs being conserved at the locations near respective lifesaving posts.

Under the Coast Guard Turtle Conservation Project (CGTCP), every effort has been made to conserve turtle eggs in or around their natural habitat to ensure protection since sea turtles are becoming a vulnerable species to extinction.

To date, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard conserved 1624 turtle eggs and released 125 sea turtle hatchlings into the sea.
