COAST GUARD RECOVERED SEA TURTLE EGGS

The collective effort of Coast Guard personnel attached to Life-Saving Posts Mirissa and Hikkaduwa recovered 1149 numbers of a Sea turtle eggs from places close to their natural habitat during the period from 08th to 14th January 2023. Meanwhile, the SLCG released 197 sea turtle hatchlings into the sea from Mirissa and Hikkaduwa during the same period.

Under the Coast Guard Turtle Conservation Project (CGTCP), every effort has been made to conserve turtle eggs in or around their natural habitat to ensure protection since sea turtles are becoming a vulnerable species to extinction.

So far in the year 2023, the SLCG conserved 2892 turtle eggs and released 322 sea turtle hatchlings into the sea.
