COAST GUARD RECOVERED SEA TURTLE EGGS

The collective effort of Coast Guard personnel attached to Life-Saving Posts Wellawatta, Mt Lavinia, Panadura, Moragalla, Hikkaduwa and Mirissa recovered 3592 numbers of a Sea turtle eggs from places close to their natural habitat during the period from 15th to 21st January 2023. Meanwhile, the SLCG released 196 sea turtle hatchlings into the sea from Wellawatta during the same period.

Under the Coast Guard Turtle Conservation Project (CGTCP), every effort has been made to conserve turtle eggs in or around their natural habitat to ensure protection since sea turtles are becoming a vulnerable species to extinction.

So far in the year 2023, the SLCG conserved 6484 turtle eggs and released 518 sea turtle hatchlings into the sea.
