COAST GUARD RECOVERED SEA TURTLE EGGS AND RELEASED TURTLE HATCHLINGS INTO THE SEA

The collective effort of Coast Guard personnel attached to Life-Saving Posts Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, Wellawaththa, Mount Lavinia, Balapitiya and Panadura recovered 2287 numbers of Sea turtle eggs from places close to their natural habitat during the period from 22nd to 31st January 2023. Recovered eggs being conserved at the locations near respective lifesaving posts. Meanwhile, SLCG released 230 and 65 sea turtle hatchlings into the sea from Mirissa and Wellawaththa during the same period.

Under the Coast Guard Turtle Conservation Project (CGTCP), every effort has been made to conserve turtle eggs in or around their natural habitat to ensure protection since sea turtles are becoming vulnerable to extinction.

So far in 2023, the Sri Lankan Coast Guard conserved 11517 turtle eggs and released 909 hatchlings into the sea.
