COAST GUARD GIVES A BETTER CHANCE TO THE SEA TURTLES BY RECOVERING TURTLE EGGS AND RELEASING TURTLE HATCHLINGS TO THE SEA

Through the cumulative cooperation of Coast Guard personal stationed to life saving posts Mirissa, Wallawatte, Panadura, Galkissa , Moragolla and Hikkaduwa retrieved 5321 numbers of sea turtles’ eggs from the territory which closes to their natural habitats during the period from 20th to 26th February 2023.The retrieved eggs being conserved near the life saving posts where the eggs have been found. Meanwhile SLCG has released 499 numbers of sea turtles’ hatchlings into the sea from lifesaving posts Mirissa and Hikkaduwa during the period.

Under the Coast Guard Conservation project (CGTCP), immense effort has been made to conserve turtle eggs along their natural habitats to ensure preservation as sea turtles are threatened with vulnerable extinction. By recovering the sea turtle eggs and releasing the hatchlings in to the sea the coast guard likely to render a second chance to the survival of sea turtle species.

So far in 2023 year Sri Lanka Coast Guard conserved 27962 turtle eggs and released 2443 hatchling to the sea.
