COAST GUARD RECOVERED SEA TURTLE EGGS AND RELEASED TURTLE HATCHLINGS INTO THE SEA

Through the cumulative cooperation of Coast Guard personnel stationed at life-saving posts Mirissa, Wellawatta, Panadura, Hikkaduwa and Mount Lavinia retrieved 3961 numbers of sea turtles’ eggs from the territory close to their natural habitats during the period from 27^th February to 05^th March 2023. The retrieved eggs are being conserved near the life-saving posts as well as where the eggs have been found. Meanwhile, SLCG has released 205, 84 and 130 numbers of sea turtle hatchlings into the sea from Balapitiya, Unawatuna and Panadura during the same period.

Under the Coast Guard Turtle Conservation project (CGTCP), an immense effort has been made to conserve turtle eggs along their natural habitats to ensure preservation as sea turtles are vulnerable to extinction.

So far in 2023, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard conserved 31711 turtle eggs and released 3151 hatchlings into the sea.
