COAST GUARD RECOVERED SEA TURTLE EGGS AND RELEASED TURTLE HATCHLINGS INTO THE SEA

Through the cumulative cooperation of Coast Guard personnel stationed at life-saving posts Mirissa, Wellawatta, Panadura, Hikkaduwa and Mount Lavinia retrieved 5533 numbers of sea turtles’ eggs from the territory close to their natural habitats during the period from 06th to 12th March 2023. The retrieved eggs are being conserved near the life-saving posts as well as where the eggs have been found. Meanwhile, SLCG has released 2271 numbers of sea turtle hatchlings into the sea from Balapitiya, Wellawaththa, Moragolla, Mount Lavinia, Panadura, Mirissa and Hikkaduwa beaches during the same period.

Under the Coast Guard Turtle Conservation project (CGTCP), an immense effort has been made to conserve turtle eggs along their natural habitats to ensure preservation as sea turtles are vulnerable to extinction.

So far in 2023, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard conserved 37244 turtle eggs and released 5422 hatchlings into the sea.
