COAST GUARD RECOVERED SEA TURTLE EGGS AND RELEASED TURTLE HATCHLINGS INTO THE SEA

Through the cumulative cooperation of Coast Guard personnel stationed at life-saving posts Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, Balapitiya, Wellawaththa, Moragalla and Mount Lavinia retrieved 2024 numbers of sea turtles’ eggs from the territory close to their natural habitats during the period from 03 to 09 April 2023. The retrieved eggs are being conserved near the life-saving posts as well as where the eggs have been found. Meanwhile, SLCG has released 4167 numbers of sea turtle hatchlings into the sea from Wellawaththa, Mount Lavinia, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, Balapitiya, and Moragalla beaches during the same period.

Under the Coast Guard Turtle Conservation project (CGTCP), an immense effort has been made to conserve turtle eggs along their natural habitats to ensure preservation as sea turtles are vulnerable to extinction.

So far in 2023, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard conserved 44468 turtle eggs and released 19479 hatchlings into the sea.
