Coast Guard personnel stationed at the life-saving post, Mirissa retrieved 78 sea turtles’ eggs from the territory close to their natural habitats on 30th April 2023. The retrieved eggs are being conserved near the life-saving post. Meanwhile, SLCG has released 2928 numbers of sea turtle hatchlings into the sea from Wellawaththa, Mount Lavinia, Panadura, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, Moragalla and Balapitiya beaches during the period from 24-30 April 2023.
Under the Coast Guard Turtle Conservation Project (CGTCP), an immense effort has been made to conserve turtle eggs along their natural habitats to ensure preservation as sea turtles are vulnerable to extinction.
So far in 2023, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard conserved 46118 turtle eggs and released 29650 hatchlings into the sea.
