COAST GUARD RETRIEVED SEA TURTLE EGGS AND RELEASED NEWLY HATCHED TURTLES INTO THE SEA

The 19th Coast Guard personnel stationed at the life-saving post, Mirissa retrieved 202 sea turtles’ eggs from the territory close to their natural habitats on 05th May 2023. The retrieved eggs are being conserved near the life-saving post. Meanwhile, SLCG has released 1603 numbers of newly hatched sea turtles into the sea from Wellawaththa, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, and Balapitiya beaches during the period from 01-07 May 2023.

The Coast Guard Turtle Conservation Project (CGTCP) has implemented a significant initiative aimed at safeguarding turtle eggs in their native habitats, with the ultimate goal of preserving these vulnerable creatures from extinction.

So far in 2023, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard conserved 46320 turtle eggs and released 31253 hatchlings into the sea.
