COAST GUARD RELEASED NEWLY HATCHED TURTLES INTO THE SEA

SLCG has released 1053 numbers of newly hatched sea turtles into the sea from Wellawaththa, Mirissa, Dehiwala, Moragalla, and Balapitiya beaches during the period from 08-14 May 2023. These turtles are released to the sea where retrieved eggs are conserved near lifesaving posts close to the natural habitat of the turtles.

The Coast Guard Turtle Conservation Project (CGTCP) has implemented a significant initiative aimed at safeguarding turtle eggs in their native habitats, with the ultimate goal of preserving these vulnerable creatures from extinction.

So far in 2023, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard conserved 46320 turtle eggs and released 32306 hatchlings into the sea.
