COAST GUARD RESCUED FIVE LOCALS FROM THE RISK OF DROWNING

The Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) Lifesavers temporarily attached to Sella Katharagama Life Saving Point 02 (Menik River) saved four locals during a successful rescue attempt on 02nd July 2023.

Three male and female devotees aged 12, 65, 13 & 17 years old who visited the Katharagama festival were rescued by Coast Guard rescuers attached to Sella Katharagama lifesaving post whilst drowning at the Menik River.

During the Katharagama festival season, the SLCG temporarily establish life-saving posts near the Menik River area since a number of devotees have baths in the river and are vulnerable to the risk of drowning.

Meantime, a 19 years old local male was rescued by the Life Savers attached to Pasikuda public beach on the same day whilst bathing and dragging away with the current. The swift response by skilled Sri Lankan Coast Guard lifesavers saved these devotees' and other persons’ lives from drowning.

So far in 2023, Sri Lanka Coast Guard lifesavers attached to 16 life-saving posts around the country have rescued 122 invaluable lives including 54 foreigners in several successful rescue attempts.
