Five hundred seventy six (576) newly born baby turtles have been hatched from several Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) hatcheries and released safely to the sea under Coast Guard Turtle Conservation Project (CGTCP). It was a rare and eye-catching event to most of the visitors at the beach, specially to the foreigners.
In CGTCP, SLCG personnel recover and conserve turtle eggs from their natural nests to ensure safety and natural habitat and conserves them in protected areas as natural nests are threatened.
Sri Lanka Coast Guard has released 35,863 turtle hatchlings to the sea during the year 2023 from hatcheries and nests close to the SLCG Life Saving Posts/ Establishments as a part of the duties and functions of SLCG in assisting the conservation of endangered marine species.
