SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF ADVANCED OIL SPILL INCIDENT MANAGEMENT TRAINING STRENGTHEN SRI LANKA'S MARITIME RESILIENCE

The successful completion of the Instructor Capacity Building Course, Part 2, of the Advanced Oil Spill Incident Management Training Programme marks a significant milestone in fortifying Sri Lanka's maritime preparedness. This collaborative effort between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japan Coast Guard (JCG) and the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) took place in Kirinda and Dikovita from 05th to 22nd February.

The training programme aimed to enhance Sri Lanka's maritime response capabilities, focusing on critical aspects of oil spill incident management. With 37 dedicated coast guard personnel, including 17 officers, immersing themselves in this transformative experience, the initiative sought to equip participants with enriched knowledge and enhanced skills essential for safeguarding coastal waters.

The comprehensive curriculum of the training programme covered theoretical and practical aspects of oil spill incident management, including response strategies, gas detection at sea, protective equipment and equipment for detecting gas. This complete approach underscores the commitment of JICA, JCG and the SLCG to fortify the nation's maritime resilience.

As the Chief Guest, the Director General of SLCG RAdm Pujitha Vithana, Mr. Tetsua Yamada and Mrs. Arisa Inada from JICA, Cdr Hideki Matsuo from JCG and their Mobile Cooperation Team, the Regional Director Western Region of SLCG Captain (G) Kalum Marambage, the Director Training of SLCG Captain (ND) Charitha Gunawantha took seats in the closing ceremony, highlighting the dedication and commitment demonstrated by participants throughout the training.

The successful completion of this programme signifies a collective resolve to safeguard coastal waters and marine ecosystems against potential threats. It represents a significant step forward in advancing Sri Lanka's maritime preparedness and underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in ensuring the security and sustainability of coastal environments.
