OPEN NATIONAL SEA SWIM ORGANIZED BY SRI LANKA COAST GUARD CONCLUDES SUCCESSFULLY

The Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) organized the Open National 2-kilometre sea swim for the second time in history, known as the "Coast Guard Cup-Fly to Mirissa," which concluded successfully on Sunday, 12 May 2024. The historic sea swimming event, named the "Coast Guard Cup-Fly to Mirissa," took place at the scenic Mirissa Sea area, right behind the Coast Guard headquarters. This event marked a significant milestone for aquatic sports enthusiasts in Sri Lanka.

The event, attended by over 60 swimmers both male and female representing about 10 sports clubs island-wide showcased the nation’s passion for swimming and sportsmanship. The Director General of SLCG graced the occasion as the chief guest, highlighting the importance of such events in promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

The open swimming meet commenced at 0730 hrs, featuring a challenging parallel swimming route of one kilometer along the beach, with participants turning around to swim the similar distance. The competition included various categories such as open men, women, veteran and foreign open categories, adding a dynamic element to the event.

Participants who demonstrated outstanding performances were recognized with valid certificates and winners of each category were awarded prestigious trophies and cash prizes for first, second and third respectively. This recognition not only celebrates individual achievements but also fosters a spirit of friendly competition and camaraderie among swimmers from diverse backgrounds.

The successful organization of this nationwide swimming competition, which welcomed foreign participants to the picturesque shores of Mirissa, highlighted the prowess of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard and also contributed significantly to promoting tourism and fostering national unity through sports.
