Sri Lanka Coast Guard Leads Environmental Protection Initiatives on World Environment Day 2024

In alignment with its key role in preserving and protecting the maritime and marine environment, the SLCG has undertaken significant initiatives to mark world environment day. As the leading entity in maritime environmental protection working group at the Heads of Asian Coast Guard Agencies SLCG always works collectively towards environmental stewardship. To commemerate world environment day SLCG spearheaded numerous beach cleanup and tree planting projects across its four regional commands from 3 to 5 June 2024.

Hundreds of Coast Guard personnel were actively involved in cleaning some of the Sri Lankan pristine tourist hotspot beaches, including Kirinda, Mirissa, Galle Fort, Balapitiya, Ahungalla, Dehiwala, Wellawatte, Uswetakeiyawa, Point Pedro, and Kankasanthurei. Through continuous efforts over the three-day period, the Coast Guard collected tons of trash, including plastic waste, and directed to proper disposal facilities.

In addition to the beach cleanups, the SLCG planted hundreds of trees, including mangroves, at various locations such as Trincomalee, Balapitiya, Kirinda, and Wellawatte. These tree planting projects aim to mitigate climate change by absorbing carbon emission and enhancing coastal ecosystems.

This extensive engagement by the Sri Lanka Coast Guard underscores its commitment to environmental stewardship and showcases its proactive efforts in maintaining and improving the health of the maritime environment. By leading these initiatives, the SLCG continues to play a vital role in promoting sustainability and environmental conservation, contributing to the global efforts to protect our planet. As we celebrate World Environment Day, the SLCG reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding the marine environment for future generations.
