Sri Lanka Coast Guard Seizes Four Numbers of Indian Dhows upon Poaching

A successful operation lead by Sri Lanka Coast Guard Ship Suraksha resulted in apprehended of 4 Indian dhows with 35 Indian fishermen involved in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters. This special operation took place in off Kudiramalei Point in Kalpitiya sea on 08th of August 2024.

The Sri Lankan Coast Guard and Sri Lankan Navy remain committed to regular patrols and operations to address illegal fishing by foreign vessels, which adversely affects the livelihoods of local fishermen. As a part of these efforts, SLCGS Suraksha located a group of Indian dhows engaged in illegal fishing activities in Sri Lankan waters during its patrol.

Under the leadership of Commanding Officer with the directives of the NorthWestern Naval Command, the ship was dispatched to control the situation. The operation successfully led to seize 04 dhows with approx 1134kg of fish and apprehend 35 fishermen who engaged in fishing illegally in Sri Lankan waters.

The seized dhows with fishermen were brought to SLNS Vijaya and handed over to the Kalpitiya Fisheries Inspector for further legal proceedings.
