Under dedicated leadership, guidance and supervision of the Commanding Officer Capt(G) UPK Vithanage, RSP & Bar, MSc DRRD (Merit)BSc (DS) MTS, Dip in Com. Prog, MIM(SL) and the ship’s crew of Sri Lanka Coast Guard Ship Suraksha proudly commemorated the 7th anniversary of its remarkable journey as the flagship of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard in Trincomalee. The ship's crew celebrated this milestone with a series of meaningful events, highlighting their commitment to community engagement and environmental sustainability.
The anniversary celebrations kicked off on 17th October 2024, with a charity initiative at ACCC Child Development Center, Ragama. The crew supported 18 no’s of underprivileged children by providing essential school supplies and household items. In addition to the donations, the ship’s crew dedicated their time and effort to installing new wall fans and making necessary repairs at the center, significantly enhancing the living conditions of the children.
On 18th October, the crew participated in a mangrove sapling planting project at Nilaweli Lagoon, Trincomalee. This initiative aimed to promote environmental sustainability and protect biodiversity within the marine ecosystem. Accordingly, ship’s crew successfully planted 100 mangrove saplings along the beach at Nilaweli Lagoon. This effort not only contributes to the restoration of coastal habitats but also reinforces the commitment of SLCGS Suraksha to environmental stewardship.
The celebrations continued with a Bodhi Pooja programme on 18th October, reflecting the spiritual aspect of the anniversary. This ceremony honored the values of peace, harmony, and goodwill within its personnel. Following the Bodhipooja, an exhilarating Inter-Ships Cricket Tournament took place on 19th October, fostering camaraderie and friendly competition among Coast Guard Ships, other Crafts and RDER Staff and a delightful social gathering at Coral Cove Beach in Trincomalee, where the Commander Eastern Naval Area graced the occasion as the chief guest, joined with several key officials. The social gathering featured music, games, and shared memories, creating a festive atmosphere that strengthened the bonds among SLCG personnel.
The 7th anniversary festivities culminated with an inspection of divisions, the old age naval tradition of having meals – ‘Barakana’ by the Commanding Officer of SLCGS Suraksha on 21st October 2024.
