19 January 2025, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) swiftly responded to an oil spill incident at Galle Harbour caused by the partial submersion of the yacht SI Nostimo at Closenburg Pier. The spill posed a serious threat to the marine environment, prompting an immediate and coordinated response led by the SLCG’s Marine Spill Response Team (MSRT) from the SLCGS Samudraraksha.
Acting quickly, the SLCG directed Port Authority to deploy oil booms to contain the spill and prevent it from spreading to sensitive areas. SLCG utilize a weir oil skimmer, and quickly recovered approximately 650 litres of contaminated oil, effectively minimizing the environmental impact. Their timely efforts ensured the situation was brought under control within a single day, safeguarding the harbour’s ecosystem.
The swift and efficient response highlights the SLCG’s commitment to protecting Sri Lanka’s maritime environment and their readiness to address emergencies. This incident reflects their vital role in preserving the country’s coastal and marine ecosystems while underscoring the importance of preparedness and collaboration with port authority responders and MEPA officials.
