SRI LANKA COAST GUARD & POLICE LIFESAVERS RESCUE 11 INDIVIDUALS AT PANADURA BEACH

In a swift and heroic operation, Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) lifesavers successfully rescued 11 individuals who were dragged away by powerful rip currents at Panadura Beach on 12 February at approximately 1710 hrs. However, one person remains missing, and observations are ongoing.

The incident occurred when 12 individuals, aged between 12 to 20 years, were caught in a strong rip current and pulled 150 to 200 meters away from the shore. Recognizing the imminent danger, SLCG lifesavers stationed at the Lifesaving Point (LSP) Panadura Beach immediately sprang into action. The rescue operation was led by Coast Guard rescuers of BGAC Senavirathne and WCP Wipulasena with the support of two police rescuers AG Lakmal and N Dhanuka, the team successfully brought 11 victims safely back to shore. Unfortunately,one individual remains unaccounted for, and observations are being carried out.

The Sri Lanka Coast Guard plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of beachgoers across the country. With trained and experienced lifesavers deployed at key coastal locations,SLCG continues to demonstrate its readiness and professionalism in emergency response situations and so far, rescued 288 personnel during the period of 2024 up to now.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of rip currents and the importance of adhering to safety guidelines when swimming in open waters. The Sri Lanka Coast Guard urges the public to exercise caution, swim only in designated safe areas, and always follow the instructions of lifeguards on duty.
