In a significant step towards enhancing maritime environmental protection, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG), in partnership with the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), launched the Advanced Oil Spill Training Programme at the Sri Lanka Coast Guard Advanced Training Centre (ATC) in Kirinda on 18th February 2025.
This specialized training programme is designed to bolster the skills and preparedness of SLCG personnel in combating oil spills, leveraging expertise from seasoned Japanese maritime professionals. The curriculum includes cutting-edge response techniques, containment strategies, and hands-on practical exercises, ensuring a robust approach to safeguarding Sri Lanka’s marine environment.
The programme is specifically tailored for 23 Sri Lanka Coast Guard personnel who have previously completed the Basic Oil Spill Course conducted by the Sri Lanka Coast Guard Marine Spill Response Team. By advancing their knowledge and technical capabilities, this initiative aims to develop a highly skilled response team capable of effectively managing complex oil spill scenarios.
The inauguration ceremony witnessed the participation of key dignitaries, including representatives from the Japan Coast Guard Mobile Cooperation Team, the Japanese National Strike Team, and senior officers from the Sri Lanka Coast Guard. Notably, Deputy Director of SLCG, Commodore Manoj Leelarathne, and Director Training, Captain Charitha Gunawantha, graced the occasion, underlining the importance of this initiative.
This collaboration between Sri Lanka and Japan is not new; it dates back to 2014, when JICA extended its support to foster capacity-building within the SLCG. Over the years, this enduring partnership has facilitated numerous training opportunities for Sri Lankan personnel in Japan, equipping them with critical expertise in maritime disaster response and oil spill management.
The Advanced Oil Spill Training Programme at ATC Kirinda marks a milestone in Sri Lanka’s ongoing efforts to mitigate marine pollution. By combining global best practices with local operational experience, this initiative enhances national preparedness for oil spill incidents, reinforcing a proactive approach to maritime conservation.
This training underscores the unwavering commitment of both Sri Lanka and Japan to protecting the marine ecosystem, fostering regional cooperation, and ensuring sustainable maritime security. With strengthened expertise and international collaboration, Sri Lanka is poised to respond to environmental threats with greater efficiency and effectiveness.
