Captain (ND) Ravindra Tissera, assumed duties as the new Commanding Officer of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard’s Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) SLCGS Suraksha, on 27thAugust 2018. He was performing duties as the Director Operations of the SLCG prior to taking over the new appointment.

The Life Saving Training School (LSTS) Balapitiya, of Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) conducted five days Basic and Resuscitation level life saving training course to a group of undergraduates of Uva Wellassa University. The course commenced on 20th August and ceremonially terminated on 24thAugust 2018. It was the third batch of students from the Uva Wellassa University who followed Life Saving training at LSTS, and the batch comprised with 11 male and 06 female students.

Coast Guard personnel attached to the SLNS Mahaweli participated in an environment cleaning programme at Cod Bay fishery harbor area on 11thAugust 2018 from 0830 hrs to 1030 hrs. 116 No’s of personnel were participated for the campaign including SLCG, SLN, Cod Bay fishery harbor staff and local fishermen. During the cleaning programme managed to collect 02 tractors of waste and 1400 plastic water bottles.

A Mobile Lifesaving Training team of Sri Lanka Coast Guard Life Saving Training School – Balapitiya, conducted a special basic lifesaving training programme for 100 Army personnel attached to Security Forces Headquarters Jaffna from 06th to 18thAugust 2018 at SLNS Agbo – Madagal, Jaffna.

International Maritime Law Enforcement (IMLE) course successfully completed at Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) Advanced Training Centre (ATC), Mirissa for the fifth time which was conducted from 6th to 17th August 2018. Whole event was coordinated by the United State Embassy of Sri Lanka and United State Coast Guard (USCG). Eight each participants from Maldives Coast Guard and SLCG followed the course and four each instructors from SLCG and USCG conducted the training programme.

Based on information received Coast Guard personnel attached to CGS Beruwala arrested a person with 15kg of dolphin meat on 07 August 2018. Arrested person with Dolphin meat was handed over to officials of department of wild life, Hikkaduwa for further investigation and legal action.

Coast Guard personnel on duty at FMP Cod Bay arrested 05 persons with 05 No’s of Thresher shark fins (01 KG) whilst checking of returning multiday fishing trawler and arrested persons with items handed over to Assistance Director Fisheries of Trincomalee for further investigations and legal action.

Sri Lanka Coast Guard Lifesavers were deployed in ten locations along the ‘Manik Ganga’ during Katharagama Festival Season held in Kataragama from 14th to 28th July 2018 and rescued 9 local pilgrims including 3 children. All were saved while drowning in Manik Ganga at Katararagama and Sellakataragama area. This brilliant effort shows the courage, dedication, bravery and professionalism of Life Savers of Sri Lanka Coast Guard.

Fishing Monitoring team of CGS Dikovita arrested seven fishermen with 1.8kg of Ocean White Tip Shark fins and 19.6kg of shark dry fish on 1st July 2018 at Dikovita fishery harbour. Fishing trawler ‘Heshan 6’ returned to Dikovita fishing harbour on 1stJuly 2018 and during the inspection by SLCG found above shark dry fish and fins hide in the engine room compartment.

Sri Lanka Coast Guard Life savers attached to Life Saving Point at Hikkaduwa in the Southern coast of Sri Lanka, rescued a foreign lady who was drowning at Hikkaduwa sea area on 15th April. The 19 years old British lady was drowning and being dragged away by the prevailing current and vigilant lifesavers promptly reacted and rescued the lady.
