Sri Lanka Coast Guards’ watchful eyes successfully captured fishermen who conducted illegal fishing of shark in the past two days. The Coast Guard personnel attached to CGS Dickovita arrested a fishing trawler named ‘RANKURULLA’ with 06 fishermen, in possession of Thresher Shark fins (7.6Kg), Ocean White Tip Shark fins (1.2Kg) and dried Shark flesh (211.8Kg), a total of 220.6Kg at Dickovita fisheries Harbour on 04thMarch 2018.

The newly constructed General Mess, Main Galley and the Victualling Stores at Sri Lanka Coast Guard Station ‘Panadura’ was declared open on 19th February 2018 by the Director General Coast Guard, RAdm GDAS Wimalathunge on the invitation of Commanding Officer SLCG Waruna Commander RH Ranasingha. Arrested person and items were handed over to the police for further investigation. As per the Law of the country, capture and sell of Live Lobsters during this breeding season is illegal and punishable offense.

The oil spill recovery mission, launched by SLCG Oil Spill Response Management Team together with the help of Sri Lanka Army, Navy, clean-up teams employed by the Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminals Limited (CPSTL) and Marine Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA) continued for five days from 16th January 2018 to 20thJanuary 2018. SLCG Team proudly marked the end of this Tier-3 oil spill recovery mission, by successfully recovering 180,000k litres of contaminated furnace oil from the Cannel.

Arrested person with Dolphin fish handed over to the Fishery Inspector, Kalutara for further investigations/ Legal action. Dolphins are a protected mammals by law in Sri Lanka and these ignorant fishermen poses a serious threat to the marine life in the Sri Lankan seas.

The Life Saving Training School (LSTS) of Sri Lanka Coast Guard conducted a five-day tailor-made Basic and Resuscitation level lifesaving training courses to a group of university students from the Uva Wellassa University. The course commenced on 15th January and ceremonially terminated on 19th January 2018. It was the second batch of students from the Uva Wellassa University who received Life Saving training at LSTS, and the batch included 19 male and one female students. Sri Lanka Coast Guard conducted Basic Lifesaving training to seven male and five female students for the first time in last July 2017 on the request of the University authorities.

Followed by a request from Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminal Limited (CPSTL), the oil spill response management team of the Coast Guard was dispatched to Kolonnawa in order to mitigate a furnace oil spillage on 16th January, 2018. The team, specialized to tackle this type of pollutions commenced their activities on site with the clean-up teams employed by the Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminals Limited (CPSTL) together with Marine Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA) engaging as the national authority.
