SRI LANKA COAST GUARD SEIZED ILLEGALLY HARVESTED THRESHER SHARK

On the early morning of 23rd July 2024, a significant illegal fishing bust took place at the Negombo harbour wet market. Acting on intelligence received, Coast Guard personnel attached to Coast Guard Sub Station (CGSS) Negombo in conjunction with Naval intelligence staff from SLNS Kelani apprehended an individual in possession of a substantial quantity of Thresher Shark meat.

At approximately 0330 hours, the combined team intercepted the suspect at the bustling Negombo harbour. The individual was found with 207 kilograms of Thresher Shark meat meticulously cut into 15 pieces and notably lacking fins. This discovery underscores the persistent issue of illegal fishing and wildlife trafficking in the region particularly concerning endangered species such as the Thresher Shark.

The suspect along with the seized shark meat was promptly handed over to the Fishery Inspector (FI) Negombo for further investigation. Their swift action not only prevents illegal products from reaching the market but also sends a strong message about the country's commitment to wildlife conservation and the enforcement of domestic and international laws.
